Treasurer Josh Frydenberg will be handing down the 2022/23 Federal Budget on Tuesday 29 March 2022. With a Federal election scheduled for May, and the Coalition’s recent slump in performance in the polls, the Budget is expected to be an electioneering Budget with the government using it as an opportunity to win over voters. Although major tax changes are not expected, there may be a number of targeted measures ostensibly aimed at supporting Australia’s continued economic recovery.

Julian Cheng is a Partner in the Tax group of Gilbert + Tobin with over 20 years’ experience in providing tax advisory services. He has extensive experience in advising on mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructures, cross border investments and financing, and fund structuring. Julian joined Gilbert + Tobin in 2020. His previous roles included 9 years as a tax partner with a Big 4 chartered accounting firm including 2 years as head of the firm’s Australian tax desk in New York providing Australian tax assistance and advice to US corporate groups and funds.
